If you own a business of any size, you can file your Form 1099 for free using the IRS’s Information Returns Intake System. You can submit 1099s for the tax year 2022 and any year after. You also don’t need any special software.
Also, for the 2023 tax year, if your business has 10 or more information returns, you have to file them electronically.
When you use IRIS, you can:
- Enter information into the portal or upload a file with a downloadable template.
- Download completed copies of 1099s.
- Submit extensions.
- Make corrections to returns you filed using IRIS.
- Get alerts for input errors and missing information.
- Get confirmation from the IRS in about 48 hours that they received your return.
- Cut costs for paper and postage.
If you have more questions about how to use IRIS, the IRS has the following guides online:
- Publication 5717, IRIS Taxpayer Portal User Guide
- General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (Forms 1096, 1097, 1098, 1099, 3921, 3922, 5498 and W-2G)
If you have questions about your business’s 1099, let us know.
